The practice whereby unions and employers negotiate the terms of a contract. A wide array of subjects is discussed in these meetings, which can include: wages, hours, and working conditions. Once the union representatives and employer agree on a set of conditions they create a contract—valid for a certain period of time—that outlines these terms. Employees are empowered in this process because they are able to have some control over their working conditions via union representatives. It is a mutually beneficial arrangement for both employers and employees because it provides a space where both parties can express their opinions freely to the other.
