Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a relatively new form of technology developed for the logistics industry for the import and export of goods. Rather than using the traditional barcode system to locate and track shipments, RFID allows manufacturers to decrease loading and unloading time through the use of radio frequencies to track the shipment’s “codes.” When in close proximity to a transmitter, the small device placed on the shipment’s container sends the product’s information to it instantly, which differs significantly from physically scanning a barcode. This has not become a widespread technology due to the high cost of RFID which most manufacturers cannot afford as an expense.
