Unit Labor Costs
A measure of productivity that is calculated by dividing the total labor compensation (including benefits) by real output. When unit labor costs are increased, a reduction in profitability for the company occurs unless it can pass along higher labor costs to its customers. These increases in unit labor costs are oftentimes viewed by economists as an early indicator of potential inflation.
