Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU)

An inexact unit of measurement used when addressing the size capacity of container terminals and container ships. Calculated from purely a volumetric standpoint, one “twenty foot equivalent unit” is roughly equal to one standard-sized intermodal container. Since volume is favored over size, a lack of standardization in the height of TEU’s (range from 4.25-9.5 feet) has emerged.
